Last week, Brazil approved a new Normative Instruction that will regulate petitions in the food sector based on approvals already granted by Equivalent Authorities from Foreign Countries (known as Autoridades Reguladores Estrangeiras Equivalentes – AREEs – in Portuguese).
This new norm is a significant step toward streamlining Brazil’s approval system, as it will allow petitions submitted to ANVISA to reference pre-approvals obtained from foreign AREEs, such as the FDA (USA), EFSA (European Union), FSANZ (Food Standards Australia & New Zealand), BfR (German Institute for Risk Assessment), and Codex (FAO/WHO).
The types of products impacted by this new norm include:
– Food additives and processing aids
– New substances for food contact materials
– Novel Foods and Novel Ingredients, except probiotics
– Foods with functional or health claims, including enzymes and probiotics
