Proposed Regulation for Food Supplements

The Ministry of Public Health of the Dominican Republic completed the public consultation on a draft of the Sanitary Regulation of Foods. This Regulation aims to establish a unified framework for all food products, including Food Supplements.

Currently, there is no specific regulation for Food Supplements in the country, making this proposed Regulation the first framework for the category.

The key elements of this proposal that impact Food Supplements are:

          • Definition: Products that contain nutrients, combinations of nutrients, and other components naturally present in foods, such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, lipids, and dietary fibre or its fractions.

                  – Presentation: Solid, semi-solid and liquid formats.

                  – Ingredients: Composition per dose form must be detailed.

          • Limits: Minimum and maximum limits for vitamins, minerals and other components will be established, based on international references.

                  – Botanicals: The common name, scientific name, and part of the plant used must be specified.

                  – Additives: the use of additives is limited to those permitted under the Dominican Standard NORDOM – General Standard for Food Additives.

          • Claims & Labelling: Nutrition and health claims, as well as labelling requirements, must comply with the appropriate NORDOM standards. The term “Food Supplement” must be clearly displayed.
