Updated Proposed Maximum Levels for Metals and Iodine
Earlier this month, the European Commission (EC) published a targeted consultation for stakeholders concerning possible maximum levels (MLs) for contaminants in seaweed and halophytes.
The inorganic contaminants under consideration are:
• Arsenic
• Cadmium
• Lead
• Iodine
This initiative follows a scientific report published by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in 2023, which concluded that the consumption of seaweed may significantly increase exposure to heavy metals and iodine.
The EC is contemplating the establishment of MLs for these contaminants to ensure consumer safety.
The deadline for stakeholders’ consultation is January 16, 2026.
