Maximum Levels for Mineral Oil Hydrocarbons in Food Supplements

The European Commission (EC) is working on measures to establish maximum levels and control requirements for Mineral Oil Hydrocarbons (MOHs) on food, specifically on Mineral Oil Aromatic Hydrocarbons (MOAH) and Mineral Oil Saturated Hydrocarbons (MOSH).

These actions will have a direct impact on Food Supplements.

Three draft documents are currently under discussion:

          1) Draft recommendations on the monitoring of mineral oil hydrocarbons in food.

          2) Draft regulation amending Regulation (EC) No 333/ 2007, which will affect the sampling and analysis methods for the controlling MOH levels in foodstuffs.

          3) Draft regulation amending Regulation (EU) 2013/915: to set maximum levels for MOAH in food, including Food Supplements. The proposed maximum levels are:

                             · MOAH = 10,0 mg/kg from 1 January 2027

                             · MOAH = 5,0 mg/kg from 1 January 2030.

MOSH: no maximum levels have been proposed due to insufficient data; however, the EC is continuing its assessment.

A revised version of the draft text is expected after the summer, with a possible vote scheduled for November 19, 2025.
