EFSA Public Consultation on Safety of CBD as a Novel Food
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is currently holding a public consultation regarding the safety of cannabidiol (CBD) as a Novel Food. This will remain open until October 14th.
In the proposed draft statement, EFSA proposes a safe daily intake of 2 mg of CBD for a 70-kg adult. According to EFSA, this recommendation is based on the need to apply an uncertainty factor derived from animal data.
Still, significant data gaps persist in areas such as long-term human studies, effects on sensitive populations and variability in exposure and bioavailability.
Current and future Novel Food applications for CBD may face challenges due to gaps and uncertainties highlighted by this public consultation. Also, if EFSA sustains the 2 mg/day limit, this could have a substantial impact on ongoing applications and the viability of submitted dossiers.
