Novel Food Status Catalogue Updates
Below are the updates related to the new entries for the Novel Food Status Catalogue. These updates refer to the month of September 2025 and have impact on Food Supplements.
Carrasco pine, White pine: Pinus halepensis Mill.
• Seeds: Not Novel in Food.
• Green pinecones and the bark: Unauthorised Novel Food. A pre-market authorisation is required before it can be put on the EU market.
• Update: New entry. Addition of the Novel Food status outcome of seeds, green pinecones and the bark of Pinus halepensis Mill.
Cordyceps militaris (L.) Fr.
• Mycelium and fruiting body: Unauthorised Novel Food. A pre-market authorisation is required before it can be put on the EU market.
• Update: Addition of precisions.
Samsoniella hepiali (Q.T. Chen & R.Q. Dai ex R.Q. Dai, X.M. Li, A.J. Shao, Shu F. Lin, J.L. Lan, Wei H. Chen & C.Y. Shen) Hong Yu bis, R.Q. Dai, Y.B. Wang, Y. Wang & Zhu L. Yang
• Mycelium and fruiting body: Not Novel in Food Supplements. Any other food uses may be considered as novel.
• Update: Addition of precisions.
Borage: Borago officinalis L.
• Leaves, flowers, seeds and seed oil: Not Novel in Food.
• Update: The entry for oil was replaced by seed oil. The seed oil is considered as not novel in food.
Pinellia ternata (Thunb.) Makino
• Rhizome and alcohol extract: Not Novel in Food Supplements. Any other food uses may be considered as novel.
• Update: New entry.
Halymenia hawaiiana Hernández-Kantún & A.R.Sherwood
• Whole: Unauthorised Novel Food. A pre-market authorisation is required before it can be put on the EU market.
• Update: New entry
Wolfiporia cocos (F.A. Wolf) Ryvarden & Gilb.
• Sclerotium (and its aqueous extract): Not Novel in Food Supplements. Any other food uses may be considered as novel.
• Update: New entry.
Chestnut: Castanea sativa Mill.
• Fermented chestnuts / Koji chestnuts (chestnut-based koji fermented with Aspergillus oryzae): Not Novel in Food.
• Update: New entry. Addition of the novel food status outcome of Koji chestnut (chestnut-based koji fermented with Aspergillus oryzae).

• Oleo-resin: Not Novel in Food Supplements. Any other food uses may be considered as novel.
• Update: New entry.
