EFSA boosts Vigilance of Food Supplements

During its last meeting in Parma, Italy, EFSA’s Emerging Risks Network spotlighted a tightening of surveillance on Food Supplements.

It was made clear that authorities and the Member States are developing a proactive approach to identify potential concerns related to Food Supplements.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reported on the progress of its activity to identify possible emerging risks. The work focuses on:

        • Collecting reports of adverse event from poison centres and nutrivigilance system.

        • Mapping substances that are predicted to be toxic, along with their presence in products available on the European market.

Although this initiative is still in its early stage, it is aimed at establishing a system that could prompt earlier regulatory intervention once signals are detected.

For now, no immediate actions have been announced.
